Savannah’s Festivals, Food, and Fun: Why Locals Love It Here
There’s something magical about Savannah. It’s not just the moss-draped oaks or the cobblestone streets — it’s the energy of a city that knows how to celebrate life. Whether you’re new in town or planning your move, Savannah’s vibrant culture is one of the many reasons locals fall in love with this place and never want to leave.
As a local real estate agent who specializes in relocation, I’ve seen firsthand how the city’s festivals, food scene, and laid-back lifestyle create an irresistible mix. Here’s a peek into the joy of living in Savannah — through its celebrations, flavors, and favorite pastimes.
SCAD Savannah Film Festival
Festivals That Bring the City to Life
Savannah knows how to throw a party — and every season brings something to look forward to:
1. SCAD Savannah Sand Arts Festival
Watch in amazement as the creative minds of our SCAD students transform simple sand into stunning masterpieces. This daylong, open-air gallery is free and fun for all to admire. This year the festival takes place on May 2nd!
2. Savannah Music Festival
World-class jazz, blues, and classical performances fill historic venues throughout the city. It’s a cultural gem for music lovers and a major draw for tourists and residents alike. The full festival takes place throughout the city in April each year but has pop up events throughout the year as well including one taking place on May 17th!
3. SCAD Savannah Film Festival
Hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design, this festival brings in big-name talent and future stars for a week of screenings, panels, and red carpet events. This festival happens every Fall where downtown Broughton street becomes like Hollywood for the week!
4. Tybee Island Beach Bum Parade
Join the Tybee Island Pirates, Locals, Tourists and everyone in between as they line the streets each year for a parade and water fight! Water balloons, water guns all the water things you can imagine! It’s a fun time for the whole family.
5. First Fridays on the Riverfront & Starland First Fridays
Celebrate local art, live music, and community with these monthly street festivals — a great way to connect with locals and explore neighborhoods like Starland District and River Street.
A Food Scene That Rivals the Best
Savannah’s food scene is a true reflection of its culture — warm, creative, and full of flavor. From classic Southern comfort food to fresh coastal fare and global influences, here’s what’s on the menu:
The Grey – A renovated Greyhound bus station turned upscale dining experience (and a must-try for anyone who appreciates fine cuisine).
Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room – Southern family-style meals served with a side of charm and hospitality.
The Collins Quarter – Australian-inspired brunch in a gorgeous historic setting.
The Wyld Dock Bar – A local favorite for seafood and cocktails on the water.
Auspicious Bakery – Biscuits, sweets, and nostalgia in every bite see them at their flagship location, their newset location on Wilmington Island or grab some of their infamous treats throughout the city at local coffee shops!
Whether you’re grabbing shrimp and grits downtown or sipping cocktails on a rooftop, food here is more than a meal — it’s a lifestyle.
Everyday Fun (and Hidden Gems) Locals Love
Savannah offers more than just tourist stops — locals enjoy a rich blend of outdoor fun, artsy escapes, and relaxing rhythms:
Walks in Forsyth Park: Morning yoga, local art markets, and endless dog-watching.
Tybee Island day trips: Beach lovers rejoice — the ocean is just 20 minutes away.
Kayaking or paddleboarding the salt marshes: A peaceful way to explore Savannah’s natural beauty.
Shopping local at farmers markets and boutiques: Handmade goods, fresh produce, and that unique Savannah style.
